Andrew qualified as a member of the Institute of Chiropodists in 1996, and worked, mostly for Scholl, in various parts of the country. He has had links with the Borders for many years and finally managed to move here in 2007.
The Human Foot is a hard working and much put upon part of the body. It supports the entire weight of the body for a minimum of 8-10,000 steps per day, (often more). Whilst very strong as a unit, this complex structure contains a large number of comparatively fragile components, including a quarter of all the bones in the body, three layers of muscles, and various associated ligaments , tendons , nerves , blood vessels etcetera. If any of these are damaged, or simply wear out, it effects the whole load bearing structure. The foot is also effected by systemic conditions such as Diabetes, and various foot specific conditions such as allergies and infections.
Basically, if the feet are not healthy and pain free, the patient will be unable to walk and stand comfortably. This will lead to excessive wear and pain in load bearing areas, such as knees, hips and the back, reducing mobility and causing problems.
The Chiropodist seeks to prevent or at least control this by regular treatments and the use of various orthotic devices. Chiropodists can do much more than simply cut toenails, so if in doubt, please ask!
Coming from a family of Southampton chiropractors was quite a valid reason for me to follow in my father’s and brother’s footsteps - which I did! Digressing for a while to teaching which took me amongst other places to Canada and Sweden, I went on to graduating from Anglo European College of Chiropractic in Bournemouth. Travelling and teaching inspired me with a real interest in the diversity of human culture. Chiropractic continues to bring me into contact with people from all walks of life – but with one thing in common: seeking relief from pain.
Having worked for many years in several practices in Edinburgh I came to the conclusion that the rural environment is where I am most happy and one cannot be more rural than the great open country and hills of the Scottish Borders! Scotia is perfectly located as a work place and I make the most of my free time by walking and remembering how lucky I am to live in such a beautiful place.
I set up Scotia Chiropractic 30 years ago and now as director I take great pride in the fact that my clinics and the work they do off site are helping patients both local and afar. The dedicated multidisciplinary team at Scotia Chiropractic brings to full fruition the concept of health support and care that I have pursued throughout my career.
I experienced back pain as a child which only a chiropractor was able to help. My life-changing experience drove me towards a career in chiropractic and to Anglo European College of Chiropractic, Bournemouth where I graduated nearly 30 years ago. Early in my journey of working in Chiropractic I came to the Scottish Borders where I opened my first clinic and eventually 3 multidisciplinary Scotia clinics in St Boswells (Head Office), Wooler and Peebles.
I specialise in babies and children and I also have a special interest in sport chiropractic and I worked as a volunteer Sports Chiropractor at the Olympics in Athens 2004 and at the London 2012 Olympics and various other international events around the world.
