A Chiropractic Appointment – What to Expect

Your first point of contact on telephoning our main switchboard 01835 823645 will be with a member of Scotia’s helpful and knowledgeable staff. An appointment will be made for you at the clinic most convenient for you (Wooler, St Boswells or Peebles). If you have any questions feel free to ask; we welcome the opportunity at this early stage to answer questions, clear up concerns and put prospective patients at ease before their first visit.

Initial Consultation

This will last approximately 1 hour. There is no need to bring any special clothing as gowns are provided.

New Patient Form: You will be asked to fill out a simple but thorough questionnaire covering your lifestyle and medical history allowing us to compile a full picture of your health, lifestyle and complaint.

Consultation: The Chiropractor will go through the form with you and have an open discussion about your day to day life and your goals and expectations for dealing with your complaint. Diagnosis and treatment can only be effective if we fully understand your health issue and share your goals.

Examination: The Chiropractor will then carry out a thorough physical examination involving orthopedic, neurological and chiropractic tests. At the end of the examination the Chiropractor will give you simply-explained information so that you can make an informed decision before starting chiropractic care. Discussion will cover the findings and how your problem has arisen, appropriate treatment and advice on how you can help yourself and your future choices. This could involve a referral elsewhere if the condition is unsuitable for chiropractic treatment. However if your condition is treatable and you are in agreement, the treatment can be started on the same day.

Treatment: Chiropractic adjustments are not painful, but you may feel slightly stiff or uncomfortable later the same day, or even the following day. This quickly wears off and is quite natural, being caused by the body readjusting to its new 'alignment’. In fact, a little soreness is a good sign as it shows that the body is beginning to stabilise itself.

Second Visit

The second visit will last approximately 15 minutes. We will address any questions you may have following your initial visit and continue your treatment programme. We will also discuss the relevant rehabilitation ideas you can do to help your recovery.

Subsequent Visits

Subsequent visits will also last 15 minutes. The number and frequency of further treatments varies for every individual. Visits tend to be closer together to begin with as an ‘intensive’ phase of care is often needed; followed by less frequent treatments during the ‘stabilisation’ phase. Each visit builds on the progress made in previous visits and missed visits can interfere with the momentum necessary to make the needed changes. Every visit involves reappraisal of your condition and the treatment programme.
