Ruth draws on a wealth of life experience. She worked for more than ten years with adults with mental health problems and learning disabilities and has worked as a reflexologist for the past ten years.
Having always been curious about what keeps some of us well and why some of us become ill, Ruth became interested in the human givens approach to psychotherapy and counselling.
This draws on the latest research into how our brains work and provides, she believes, a quick and effective way to resolve distress.
Being a mother, grandmother, gardener and hillwalker are some of the other ways she fills her time.
Psychotherapy and Counselling
The human givens approach used at Scotia combines proven techniques, such as cognitive behavioural therapy, with the most up-to-date psychological knowledge to relieve emotional distress and help you move on as quickly as possible.
It is the needs and resources which we all have that make up the human givens. Human givens therapists focus on helping clients identify unmet emotional needs and empowering them to meet these needs by activating their own natural resources in new ways.
Human Givens Therapy at Scotia can help:
- break the cycle of depression, lifting low self-esteem and even depression quickly and bringing joy and meaning back to your life.
- treat psychological trauma, resolving past intrusive traumatic events effectively and quickly.
- reduce anxiety in the form of generalised anxiety, panic attacks, fears, phobias, lack of confidence or overwhelming stress and pressure
- manage anger.
- relieve medical conditions having an emotional component, such as psoriasis, eczema, asthma, irritable bowel syndrome, chronic pain and migraine.
- stop addictive behaviours – all forms of addiction can be helped provided the person wants to make the effort to stop.
- Harmonise relationships – difficulties are often self-perpetuating because our beliefs and reactions to one another trigger patterns of behaviour which stop us solving them. When couples want to stay toether but are having problems, human givens therapists can help.
