Gardening Safely
Gardening – cultivate an ergonomic approach and keep this popular pastime safe and enjoyable for all.
We all need to be aware of how to use our bodies whether it is in a work environment or out in the garden. Some of the tips that we are already aware of at work can be brought to the garden quite easily.
- Do not bend unless absolutely necessary –
• re-pot at table height
• use long handled tools such as hoes, spades and rakes. - Work below shoulder level where ever possible.
- If having to work at or above shoulder height, carry out the task for no longer than five minutes.
- Have plenty of breaks. This is especially important if you are digging, bending, stretching, carrying etc.
- Do not leave things lying about as they will accidents looking for somewhere to happen.
- But the right tool for the job. Make sure you know why you want it, how often you are going to use it, and be aware of the safety aspects. This is especially important with electrical tools.
- Make sure the gardening implement is well balanced and comfortable. They have spent years developing these refinements, so make the best use of them.
- Be aware of safety when making garden design features. Who will be using them, how the weather affects them etc. Think through the use of steps, paths, decking and ponds.
